About
Axum / Aksum
Axum (Aksum) was a major centre of ancient Ethiopian civilisation. Stelae fields, archaeological areas, royal tombs, the St Mary of Zion complex (where access is available) and museum collections give travellers a sense of an empire that linked the highlands to Red Sea and Nile worlds. On Explore Ethiopia journeys, Axum closes the progression as “ancient empire” after lake, kingdom, mountain and sacred stone.
The aim is to tell Axum’s story — political power, trade, early Christianity and archaeology — rather than only photograph monuments. Site opening, museum hours and access to specific compounds can change; plans adapt. Optional historical excursions such as Yeha may be added according to current road and site access.
