Central Ethiopia highlands; national capital and principal international gateway
Addis Ababa is the practical starting and finishing point for most Ethiopia journeys arranged through Gondar Simien Tours / Simien Ethio Tours. Travellers arrive here by international flight, connect onward by domestic air or road, and often return for a final night before departure. The city sits in the highland plateau and functions as a logistics hub rather than the company’s specialty landscape — Gondar remains home, and Simien remains the core mountain product — but Addis is where journeys begin, connect and close.
Northwestern Ethiopia; southern shore of Lake Tana; Amhara Region capital
Bahir Dar is a lakeside city on the southern shore of Lake Tana and the natural gateway for lake monastery visits and seasonal Blue Nile Falls excursions. Wide avenues, lakeside walks and a different rhythm from Gondar’s highland streets make it a distinct destination in its own right — not only a label under Lake Tana.
Northwestern Ethiopia; Ethiopia’s largest lake; UNESCO Biosphere Reserve context; accessed from Bahir Dar
Lake Tana changes the pace of an Explore Ethiopia journey. From Bahir Dar, boat travel reaches selected island and shore monasteries and churches, where Ethiopian Orthodox monastic traditions, religious art and lake culture form the focus. Access to individual sites depends on operating conditions, water conditions and local arrangements — not every monastery is open or reachable on every visit.
Near Bahir Dar / Lake Tana corridor; optional half-day or day excursion
Blue Nile Falls is an optional excursion from the Bahir Dar area. Flow and appearance vary strongly with season and water conditions. After rains the falls can carry substantial volume; in drier periods the cascade may be modest. Road access and local conditions also affect whether a visit is practical on a given day.
Lasta highlands, northern Ethiopia; rock-hewn church complexes
Lalibela is known for its rock-hewn churches carved downward into volcanic rock — a sacred landscape that remains part of living Ethiopian Orthodox worship, not only a heritage circuit. On Explore Ethiopia journeys it represents the “sacred stone” stage of the progression after lake, kingdom and mountain country.
Tigray Region, northern Ethiopia; ancient kingdom centre
Axum (Aksum) was a major centre of ancient Ethiopian civilisation. Stelae fields, archaeological areas, royal tombs, the St Mary of Zion complex (where access is available) and museum collections give travellers a sense of an empire that linked the highlands to Red Sea and Nile worlds. On Explore Ethiopia journeys, Axum closes the progression as “ancient empire” after lake, kingdom, mountain and sacred stone.
Northern-circuit extension — Near Lalibela
Yemrehanna Kristos is a cave church complex near Lalibela, built within a natural rock shelter and noted for its wooden architecture, stonework and quieter setting compared with the main Lalibela churches. It is offered as an optional extension from Lalibela where road access and timing allow, and suits travellers who want a deeper look at Lasta’s sacred landscape beyond the principal rock-hewn circuit.
Northern-circuit extension — Near Axum / northern historical area
Yeha is an early historic site near Axum, known for its monumental stone temple and associations with pre-Aksumite and early highland civilisation. It is offered as an optional historical excursion from Aksum according to current access and road conditions. The visit suits travellers interested in archaeology and the deeper timeline of northern Ethiopia beyond the Axum stelae fields.

Tigray Region, northern Ethiopia; primarily Hawzen district area; sandstone cliffs and mesas
The Gheralta (Geralta) mountains rise as sandstone cliffs, flat-topped mesas and isolated rock formations, with historic rock-hewn churches and monasteries set in demanding locations. The landscape feels distinct from both Simien’s Afro-alpine escarpments and Lalibela’s highland town churches. Churches here are often reached by steep approaches; exact sites visited depend on fitness, weather and current access.
Optional extension
Extreme northeast Ethiopia; Afar Region; low-elevation desert and volcanic landscapes
The Danakil Depression is one of Ethiopia’s most extreme environments: heat, salt flats, volcanic terrain and wide open horizons. It is a fundamentally different journey from the cool highlands of Gondar and Simien. For travellers who want to extend Explore Ethiopia further, Danakil can be combined with a wider private itinerary when conditions, logistics and access allow.
Optional extension
Simien Mountains highlands; high-peak context alongside Ras Dashen and Bwahit
Kidis Yared is a high peak in the broader Simien massif, discussed alongside Ras Dashen and Bwahit in serious summit-oriented trekking. For most website visitors it is a reference peak — part of understanding the scale of the Simien massif — rather than a standard day-trip destination.
